Sustainability

Sustainable Travel

So lately we hear this word all the time: sustainability.

So what do we mean by this exactly?

For a simple definition, the word can be broken down: the ability to be sustained, or supported, by a system. In this case, we are of course referring to our planet. Here at Travel Culture we focus on all three pillars of sustainability: the social, economic, and ecological.

The 3 Pillars of Sustainability

Social

Protecting the community and its people
  • Being aware of and respecting local customs such as dress codes in places of worship
  •  Supporting business that provide equal employment opportunities such as tour companies that employ female guides
  • Join tours by locals that focus on the history and culture of the places you’re visiting

Economic

Keeping tourism dollars local
  • Choosing locally made souvenirs over those imported from elsewhere
  • Eating at locally owned restaurants and buying food directly from markets or small local shops
  • Finding boutiques/thrift store or local artists studios to patronage

Ecological

Protecting the environment
  • Researching cruelty-free wildlife tourism, where animals are not abused for entertainment
  • Avoiding the use of single-use plastics, recycling where possible
  • Buying from companies devoted to sustainable efforts, whether reducing waste or using eco-friendly materials

Our Sustainability Mindset

We are trying to do better by constantly educating and re-educating ourselves so that we may improve on a personal level, but also so that we may pass on what we learn to you. We hope to make it more accesible so you can get all your tips from eco-friendly travel to socially conscious actions all in one place.

So come dive right in and join us on this road to sustainability.
